With the November election approaching, voters are finalizing their thoughts on candidates, parties, and platforms. Many people choose to focus on a single issue as a way of solving the complexity of that informational system. We can be tempted to decide on simply one aspect of a candidate, one influencer soundbite, one long-time party affiliation, or one issue that we decide to elevate over others. That helps with the cognitive complexity of making a choice in voting, but we have to ask ourselves whether that fits with the spirit of democracy. As such, this lecture will pose the question of how someone might be a single-issue voter in 2024.
